Supporting the Arts in Relay (S.T.A.R., Ltd.) is a non-profit organization providing opportunities for creative growth, personal development and leadership in the visual and performing arts for youth and young adults in the Baltimore-D.C. region.
STAR was founded in the summer of 2000 by community members in the Catonsville and Relay area, led by Gina Hrybyk.
In the summer of 2002, Rosie Hrybyk added a two week drama workshop for elementary school students to the STAR program, to complete her Girl Scout Gold Award. Since then, STAR has expanded its reach into the local community by offering three separate summer workshops for ages 4 through young adult, and hopes to continue its growth and offer more programs throughout the year.
STAR is governed by a volunteer board of dedicated community members. STAR provides opportunities for young people to foster their love of musical theater, not only by performing on stage, but also by training in technical positions, such as set construction, lighting and sound design, and stage management. Many of our participants start out as performers with STAR and move on to leadership positions within the organization. Parents are encouraged to participate and volunteer in any way they can, and even to join the board.
